Comrade Oyekan Oluwadare Aderibigbe has described his emergence as the Executive Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Club, Ikoyi, Lagos as a call to duty.

Aderibigbe emerged as the Chairman of the club in an election that took place on Friday, June 27. Also elected into the executive of the club were Uwemedimo Menim Eyo as Secretary, Mrs. Bolanle Bamitale Lolawole as Treasurer, Mr. Fola Odegbami as Social Secretary, and Mr. Abhulimen Julius Oziegbe as Publicity Secretary,

Speaking after being sworn in as the Chairman of the club, Aderibigbe described his victory as a call to duty, a call to work vigorously to bring the past glory of the club back. He stated that the new team on the ground had decided that it was high time the club became the giant of all Federal Civil Service Clubs across Nigeria.

Furthermore, he added that his executive intends to make the club more popular and attractive to federal civil servants across Lagos. Aderibigbe opined that being the treasurer of the outgone administration allowed him to know first-hand the difficulties facing the club, even as he promised to tackle the issues one after the other, adding that his executive will collaborate with well-meaning Nigerians, philanthropists, and None Government Organisation (NGO) that will come to their aide, and financial their projects to make the club a suitable and rateable place.

Mohammad Sani Saidu, a representative of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack stated that the Civil Service Club Ikoyi, Lagos is one of the clubs that the service takes seriously because of its performance. He noted that the club remains the best among the three in Lagos.

On the electoral process that brought Aderibigbe to office, Saidu stated that he thought that the executive positions would be keenly contested, but felt surprised to see some positions vacant. However, he noted that he was impressed with the reactions of the members of the club to the emergence of Aderibigbe as Chairman, adding that he is sure that the members are ready to improve on what is happening in the club. Saidu identified funding as one of the major challenges of the club, adding that subvention from the government is no longer coming as usual.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Electoral Election Committee 2025, Elder Samuel Ajayi Babatunwase (JP), Chairman Emeritus noted that the committee had put the right pegs in the right holes in Federal Civil Service Club of Nigeria Ikoyi-Lagos. He said that the committee was saddled with the responsibility of ensuring the election of credible individuals to occupy elective posts in the club, and it had done just that.

Elder Babatunwase, who was occupying the office of the Chairman electoral election committee for the third consecutive time, revealed that due process was followed in everything that preceded the election and the election proper. According to him, all aspirants who picked forms from the electoral committee were interviewed and screened to check their status in their various ministries, their age, financial status, level, and salary grade because the club has yardsticks for anyone to contest for any post.

Furthermore, he highlighted that three people were contesting for the office of the Chairman, but two were disqualified because they were contesting from the same ministry, a situation which is against the constitutional provisions of the club.

Elder Babatunwase said the duo refused to step down for each other despite the committee enlightening them that the consequence of their decision was disqualification. He noted that in the end, they were both disqualified allowing the last candidate to run unopposed.

He described the newly elected Chairman as being capable of the job. According to him, Aderibigbe is the vice chairman of the Lagos State National Labour Congress (NLC), and he also acts as a director in the Nigerian Directorate of Works. He added that even in his former position as the Treasurer of the club, he was known to be very careful in handling financial commitments to members.

He concluded that such were the qualities of an ideal Chairman who can champion the course, and lead the club for the next three years.

On his part, Barrister Sunday Abimbola, the Secretary of the Electoral Committee 2025, stated that there is high expectation for the new chairman of the Civil Service Club, Ikoyi, Lagos, to deliver. He said: “The election was a success because the club members appeared to be happy with the victory of the new Chairman. However, the new executive needs orientation to be able to function properly in the office. It appears because of distance and liquidity, many people are not taking part in the club activities like before. It appears that the very foundation of the Federal Civil Service Club is eroded. The garden, which is supposed to be a place of leisure, a place of no noise to cool your brain, has been franchised out to someone who is always making noise with music; such should be curbed; there should be low music so that people can be able to discuss. The man does not appreciate the essence of the club; he is only commercially oriented. The accommodation is also expensive because it was franchised. The average civil servant who is coming from Abuja can’t afford it, except if the government is paying for you. So, some of these things have to be looked into.

“The new Chairman is a labour union member, and you know that organised labour is always criticising the government, so one would think that he would come and deliver. There are high expectations of him to deliver, especially to his constituency, more so, he was the treasurer of the former executive.”
