The Lagos State government has sealed Dowen College in Lekki over indiscriminate waste disposal.
The state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a post shared on his official X handle on Wednesday.
According to him, the action was taken by operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) in collaboration with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), under the state’s #ZeroToleranceLagos initiative.
The commissioner also, shared a video showing two staff members of the school caught disposing of waste irresponsibly, a development that reportedly prompted the government intervention.
Accompanying the video, he wrote: “This waste was traced to Dowen College in Lekki Phase 1. Such disregard for environmental laws is unacceptable.
“Corps Marshall of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps have been directed to proceed with sealing the premises. We will not hesitate to take firm action against any institution or organisation that violates our waste management regulations.
“Lagos must remain clean, safe and healthy for all residents, and enforcement will continue without compromise.”
Meanwhile, he has warned that the state has a duty to enforce environmental laws and ensure public health is protected. “Dowen College violated basic waste management protocols, and the government cannot condone such behaviour.”
The school remains closed pending compliance with proper waste disposal and sanitation regulations, he said, warning other institutions to adhere strictly to environmental standards or face similar sanctions.
