Nollywood actress and filmmaker Iyabo Ojo has broken her silence following a recent invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in connection with the spraying of money during her daughter’s wedding ceremony.
In a detailed statement shared via her verified Instagram account, Ojo confirmed that she was summoned by the EFCC and visited the agency’s office on Monday, shortly after returning from a trip to the United Kingdom.
She explained that she decided to speak out after receiving numerous calls, messages, and online inquiries from fans and well-wishers who were concerned about the situation and her well-being.
Ojo recounted that during her visit, EFCC officials questioned her extensively about her personal background, career history, and business activities.
The agency also presented video evidence from her daughter’s wedding, showing guests — including celebrities and friends — spraying both naira and foreign currencies, such as U.S. dollars.
She expressed surprise when the EFCC clarified that spraying money, whether naira or foreign currency, at public events is illegal in Nigeria.
“I was asked if I knew this was illegal, and I explained that I thought only abuse or mutilation of the Naira was an offence,” Ojo wrote. “I was surprised to learn that spraying any currency, including Dollars, is also not allowed.”
Ojo noted that she was released the same day after questioning, and her lawyer, O.I. Salami, remained as her legal representative in case further inquiries arise.
She thanked her supporters for their concern and used the opportunity to offer advice to the public.
Reflecting on the experience, she called for a cultural shift, urging Nigerians to reconsider the popular tradition of spraying money at events.
“Given this experience, I strongly advise against spraying any currency in Nigeria to avoid issues with the EFCC,” she said. “Perhaps it’s time to reconsider this long-standing tradition. Let’s prioritise caution and avoid any potential problems.”
