An explosion suspected to have been caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) has struck Woro community in Kaiama LGA of Kwara State, leaving one person dead and others injured, while raising fears of further casualties.

Rafiu Ajakaye, the chief press secretary to the state governor confirmed the incident on a popular WhatsApp platform on Monday.

He said, “The IED incident occurred on a road a distance from Woro. The device went off as a vehicle rode past it on Monday morning.”

He disclosed that a man died instantly in the blast, while a woman travelling with a child sustained injuries.

“Sadly, the man died instantly, while his passenger, a woman travelling with a little child, sustained injuries,” he added, noting that the woman is receiving treatment and responding positively, while the child escaped unhurt.

However, local authorities indicated that the casualty figure may be higher.

ZulQharnain Shero Musa, media aide to the Kaiama Local Government chairman, said,“there was an explosion around Woro this morning. The explosion claimed lives, though the number of casualties is not yet confirmed.”

Musa added that preliminary reports suggest the device may have been planted by insurgents.

“A car drove over an IED. We believe it was planted by Boko Haram members,” he said.

The incident has triggered fresh panic among residents, coming weeks after a deadly February attack in the same community, where armed men reportedly killed several people, destroyed property and displaced families.

Residents have renewed calls for urgent intervention by security agencies to prevent further violence and protect lives and property in the area.
