Edo Government slams EFCC over arrest of accountant general, others

Published

The Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, has said that the arrest of the accountant general of the state, Julius Anelu, and two others is meant to cripple governance in the state

In a statement released on Saturday, the Commissioner said that from Monday, the state government would have been grounded and unable to meet up with basic responsibilities and obligations.

He said, “The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, in a letter dated October 28, 2024, invited four officials from the Edo State Treasury Office, including the Accountant General, Julius Anelu, to its Benin Office. The letter of invitation, addressed to the Secretary to the State Government and titled “Loans and Agricultural Interventions Granted to Edo State Government from Central Bank of Nigeria and Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL) from 2018 to date,” pertains to an agricultural facility that has since been repaid by the State Government.

“The government officers, including the state accountant on Thursday, honoured the invitation as requested at the Benin Office of the EFCC to provide necessary answers as required by the EFCC. However, upon realising that one of the invited officials was no longer a signatory to the government account, the EFCC released the officer and requested for the current signatory, whose name was not initially on the invitation letter.

“The said officer is now also being detained by the agency at Abuja, in addition to the others who were originally invited and honoured the invitation. The EFCC seems intent on crippling governance in Edo State and acting out a script that portends grave danger to democracy. The reason for the invitation of these civil servants is clear, contrary to the invitation letter to keep them in EFCC custody until November 12, the day of the termination of the tenure of this government.

“In fact, from Monday, the government would have been grounded and will no longer be able to meet up with basic responsibilities and obligations. This devious action is most condemnable and reprehensible and we urge the EFCC to act responsibly in the interest of democracy, justice, peace and the wellbeing of Edo people and immediately release these government officials, and not throw Edo State into chaos. Edo State Government led by Governor Godwin Obaseki runs a transparent and accountable government. This government runs until November 12th, 2024. unconstituitional actions should not be done to hinder its operations.

Join the Movement to Build a Culture of Proper Waste Segregation and Disposal in Lagos.

As part of its efforts to promote a cleaner, greener, and healthier environment, The Architects Place Ltd In conjunction with the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources has launched an initiative to provide proper waste disposal bins across the state.

The initiative, which is aimed at building a culture of proper waste segregation and disposal, is designed to encourage residents, businesses, and institutions to properly dispose their waste and recyclables.

The proper waste disposal bins, which are designed to accommodate different types of waste, including recyclables, organics, and non-recyclable waste, will be strategically located in public spaces, markets, and other high-traffic areas.

This will help to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills and waterways, improving environmental health and reducing the risk of disease. By providing separate bins for recyclables, the initiative will encourage residents and businesses to recycle more, reducing waste and conserving natural resources.

We urge all residents, businesses, and institutions in Lagos to join us in this effort to build a culture of proper waste segregation and disposal. Together, we can make a difference and create a cleaner, greener, and healthier environment for all.

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama has rejected the bail request by former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello.

Bello is standing trial, along with two others, on an alleged N110bn money laundering charge brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Justice Maryanne Anenih, in a ruling on Tuesday, faulted the competence of Bello’s bail application, stating that it was filed prematurely.

Justice Anenih held that, since the application was made when Bello was neither in custody nor before the court, it was deemed incompetent.

She said: “Consequently, the instant application, having been filed prematurely, is hereby refused.”
