Residents and occupiers of buildings surrounding a construction site at 28 Saka Tinubu Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, have sent a “save our souls” message to the Lagos State Government over an unsafe construction in the vicinity. They claim the new building poses a significant threat to their lives and property.

The multi-floor construction, supervised by Diplomat Homes Limited, allegedly fails to adopt the necessary safety standards. This has already caused damage to cars and other property in offices and compounds near the building.

Failure to Implement Safety Measures Sparks Fear

According to residents, the developers of the new property, which a top traditional ruler in the South West allegedly owns, failed to provide adequate safety measures. They did not install barricades, safety nets, and other protective structures required when building next to other properties, which has made this project dangerous and unsafe; It has resulted in boulders and planks falling from the construction site into neighboring compounds, damaging walls, windows, ceilings, and cars.

More importantly, residents have genuine fears that falling planks and pebbles could harm innocent people on their premises and even lead to fatalities, making it realistically unsafe. They question why the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), which supervises new building construction in the state, and the Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, have not yet taken action to prevent potential loss of life and property at the site.
