Rano Air Limited has confirmed that its Abuja to Sokoto flight suffered an engine malfunction mid-air on Sunday, but insisted that no lives were lost and no passenger or crew member sustained any injuries during the incident.
The confirmation follows reports by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), which revealed on Monday that the aircraft, with registration number 5N-BZY, developed a fault on its No. 1 engine.
Passengers reportedly noticed smoke in both the cabin and flight deck, forcing the crew to activate emergency procedures. Oxygen masks were deployed, and the pilot managed to land the aircraft safely at Sokoto Airport.
The NCAA Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, stated that the aircraft had been grounded while engineers and the Directorate of Airworthiness conducted a thorough investigation.
A rescue aircraft expected to airlift stranded passengers from Sokoto was unable to be deployed as it was already operating another route.
Amidst questions raised about the airline’s response, Rano Air Limited has maintained that all standard safety measures were followed and that the crew acted professionally to ensure the safety of passengers.
It said, “Rano Air Limited wishes to inform the public of an incident that occurred on Sunday, June 29, 2025, involving one of our aircraft (registration number 5N-BZY) operating a flight from Abuja to Sokoto.
“The aircraft experienced an in-flight issue with one of its engines. Following standard safety protocols, our highly trained flight crew initiated all necessary procedures and safely landed the aircraft at Sokoto Airport.
“After a successful landing, the Aircraft was promptly grounded under Rano Air’s safety policies to allow for an investigation to begin, complying with established industry standards.
“The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has been duly notified, and the affected aircraft has been grounded for a thorough investigation by the Directorate of Airworthiness. Our team of engineers is currently on-site, working in full cooperation with aviation authorities to determine the root cause of the incident.
“We are pleased to confirm that no injuries were reported among passengers or crew members onboard. All individuals are safe and have disembarked.
“Rano Air Limited prioritizes the safety and well-being of its passengers and crew.”
“We regret any inconvenience or concern this incident may have caused. We commend our flight crew for their professionalism and adherence to safety procedures, which ensured a safe outcome,” it added.
