Lagos Food Bank Initiative marked a significant milestone this February 2026. A decade of sustained impact in the fight against hunger and malnutrition across vulnerable communities in Lagos State.
The anniversary celebration was both reflective and forward-looking, bringing together board members, staff, volunteers, corporate partners, partner NGOs, and supporters who have contributed to the organisation’s journey over the past decade.
Founded in 2016 by Michael A. Sunbola, the initiative was born out of a deeply personal commitment to end food insecurity. Having experienced hunger firsthand in his early years, Sunbola transformed his experience into a mission to ensure that no child or family would suffer the indignity of going to bed hungry.

Over the past ten years, that mission has grown into a structured and impactful movement — delivering food assistance, running nutrition intervention programmes, supporting pregnant women and children, implementing school feeding initiatives, and promoting sustainable food systems in underserved communities.
Speaking during the celebration, the tone was one of gratitude and shared accomplishment. It was emphasised that the journey was never a solo effort but a collective endeavour sustained by partnership and trust.
A key message delivered at the event captured the spirit of the milestone: ‘’Ten years ago, the organisation began with a simple but powerful vision — to fight hunger while preserving the dignity of those served. Today, that vision stands firm because of the unwavering dedication of its team, the guidance of its board, the commitment of volunteers, the generosity of corporate partners, the collaboration of partner NGOs, and the goodwill of countless supporters.’’
The anniversary was therefore not only a celebration of achievements, but an expression of deep appreciation to everyone who believed in and built the mission.
The message concluded with a strong sense of optimism that while much has been accomplished in a decade, the work is far from over, and indeed, the best is still ahead.
As the Lagos Food Bank Initiative enters its second decade, its resolve remains clear: to expand its reach, deepen its impact, and continue restoring hope to families facing food insecurity. Ten years on, what started as a compassionate response to a pressing need has become a beacon of dignity, resilience, and community-driven change.
