A Magistrates Court sitting in Ota, Ogun State has sentenced a 38-year-old Islamic cleric, Azeez Aboderin, to two years in prison for fraudulently collecting N2.2 million under false pretence from a woman.

The Islamic cleric had earlier pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of fraud and obtaining money under false pretence.

Delivering judgement on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, the Magistrate, O.O. Fadairo, sentenced Aboderin to two years imprisonment with an option of N200,000 fine.

Fadairo also asked the Islamic cleric to restitute N2.2 million to the complainant, Oyeniyi Mariam.

She added that the prosecution counsel, ASP E.O. Adaraloye, proved beyond reasonable doubt that Aboderin was guilty of the charge brought against him.

Earlier, Adaraloye told the court that the Muslim prophet committed the offences at Iyana-Iyesi area in Ota between January and July 2025.

He said the convict fraudulently collected the sum under false pretence from the complainant to assist her on an undisclosed problem.

He added that the Islamic cleric converted the money to personal use instead of doing what the complainant asked him to do for her.

Adaraloye said the offences contravened Section 390 and 419 of the Criminal Code, Law of Ogun, 2006.
