President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has revealed the real cause of problem in the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC.
Speaking on Saturday at the grand finale of the 25th anniversary of the NDDC in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Akpabio said the disunity among members of the management team the NDDC created problems for the agency.
The Senate President also said that over 17,500 NDDC projects were abandoned due to leadership change.
“Why do we have so much problems in the NDDC? There are many reasons. Part of it is leadership tussle. In the Niger-Delta region, we have politics of the same head, where no one wants to wait for his turn. Everyone feels that he should be here and the other person.
“There was always this conspiratorial situation. Each management in the NDDC will conspire against themselves. And of course those staff you met on ground will assist you to quarrel and shortly after, they will send you away. Maybe one of them will become acting Managing Director.
“When I was Minister of Niger-Delta, I realized that was the main issue. The NDDC for more than 20 years stay in a rented apartment on Aba road, paying N300 million a year. And that apartment was not connected to the national grid,” he said.
